People use numerous forms of painting to portray their emotions and feelings on a canvas. But how do we distinguish whether it is an art or not? Art can be labeled when the creation of one person conveys a meaningful message and is appreciated by someone else.
Art galleries are a prominent platform for artists and their art to gain recognition. Simultaneously it inspires beginner artists with new ideas and possibilities. A few of the renowned art galleries in Dhaka have without a doubt established themselves, keeping their roots strong. Besides displaying art, they have also hold on to the country’s historical possessions.
National Art Gallery, inaugurated in 1974 is the first art gallery in Bangladesh. It was established by the Father of the Nation to enrich the cultural and traditional ethnicity of our country. Each year, mind-blowing arts and crafts flow in to be presented at the annual art exhibition hosted by Shilpakala Academy. At the latest, 22nd Young Artists’ Exhibition in 2020, 368 artworks by 377 artists were presented. Many people from all over Bangladesh crowded to witness the exclusive works of our nation’s people. Soma Surovi Jannat, the winner of the exhibition mentioned to ‘New Age Entertainment’ that there is no better place than the national art gallery to display her creation and get acknowledgment. Bengal Shilpalay is one of the diverse art gallery set up as a publication of Bengal foundation. For the past three decades it has projected the rich culture of Bangladesh in all forms. Some exclusive paintings of Bangladeshi artists are exhibited in Bengal Shilpalay. “Baseer: an eloquent mind underway” and “Kazi Ghiyasuddin: painting for peace and harmony” are a few to name. The chairperson of Bengal foundation, Mr. Abul Khair have said, “There can be no better means of ensuring the bonding of people, of bringing them together, than through cultural exchange. The aesthetic sensibility and creative urge that come together in the arts are surely the ingredients that foster ties between societies, and greatly assist in the promotion of all those attributes that strengthen humanity.”
Yet another organization that is determined to create a strong link between art lovers across the globe is Abinta Art gallery. The show offers 150 painting, drawings, prints, ceramics, installation and tapestry by 67 artists. It was founded in 2012 by Ms. Nilu Murshed and named Abinta in memory of her granddaughter Abinta Kabir. Ms. Nilu has been collecting art for 40 years and decided to display the rare works of famous artists for the people to relish. Arts of Zainul Abedin, Sheikh Muhammad Sultan, Quamrul Hasan, Rafiqun Nabi and many more are showcased in the gallery. Ms. Nilu have said in an interview, “My aim is to create a cultural hub where art connoisseurs and newcomers alike can appreciate and learn of the exciting new trends that are being pioneered by a new generation of artists.” She has established an art gallery to help artists expand their gen.
The modern Edge Gallery designed with high ceiling and an indoor and outdoor concept with quiet and serene environment lie in Gulshan’s Bay’s Edge water. Inaugurated in 24th March, 2016 edge hopes to build an improved society by presenting art culture into people’s sensibilities. Internationally collaborated events such as DLAB- Dhaka Live Art Biennale have taken place at Edge. 28 artists from 26 countries around the world gather to showcase their elite projects to the people of Bangladesh. Edge gallery has team of artists working along with them to help create paintings on relevant topics. Present-day visitors feel a deep connection as they can relate to the art. It is also a great way to preserve the world’s condition for future generations to see.
Reading about how art is a magical world is great but to truly feel it we must explore the art galleries. Take a walk along the peaceful passage alone or with a friend. Observe the masterpiece with no curfew. Identify fine details and mesmerize yourself.
