Amplitude: Waves of Change

-Nadya Tamrin

Ever wondered how people with great ambitions start off their quest for change? Could it be as simple yet influential as going through your studies and being inspired by a word you read? Well it was the case for Nafira Nayeem, an incredible individual who has been working for development in the country for a long time. Today, she is the CEO of a thriving charity, “Amplitude”, a word that speaks volumes to her , and is working towards providing basic rights to the underprivileged community in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She is undoubtedly setting the perfect example of “Youths are the leaders of tomorrow” as said by Nelson Mandela.

“Amplitude'' started its journey back in August 2019 with the initiative of two young souls. Later, taken control by Nafira due the other partner retiring. In October 2019 they hosted their first event, ‘Art exhibition: Galvanizing’ in Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Arts done by children with special needs in Bangladesh Shishu Bikash were exhibited in order to highlight the importance of showing empathy towards them. The ceremony included a candle light session and cultural event along with the Art exhibition. Maxmystel, Connected and Odd Men Out were the few artists who wrapped up the event with a mystical cultural show. In December 2019 “Amplitude'' arranged their first winter drive, ‘Benevolence’ with a purpose to summon warmth upon the street residents. Warm clothes and petroleum jelly were donated to those in need in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The succession of ‘Benevolence’ was carried out a year later in December 2020. This year around, 200 clothes were donated in Dhanmondi Lake, at a slum in Rayer Bazar Baddabhumi and in Dilu Road Madrasa. In March 2021, ‘Amplitude’ organized its first woman’s day campaign; naming it ‘Paint it Red’ in order to raise awareness surrounding menstruation. They donated menstrual hygiene products to an orphanage and uplifted the matter to bring about a natural point of view. The campaign also included a video of a few iconic feminists of Bangladesh discussing feminism.

For Eid ul Fitr 2021, Amplitude has decided to carry out a clothing donation event, ‘Amplitude:Khair’. “When we donated clothes the last time, I saw the smile on everyone's face and I could tell how happy they were” said Nafira with a graceful heart. This event is dedicated towards bringing happiness to the less fortunate community on the day of Eid.

When she was questioned about the inspiration behind ‘Amplitude’ she answered, “Ever since I was 9, I always knew I had to start something. I was called a leader in school and family.” She was always in the search of ways to put her leadership into action. Being only 17, Nafira and her team have already made many souls smile through their work. She mentioned, “My biggest flex right now is my team” when she was asked about balancing everything in life. She proudly stated, “If the deadline is at 10, I’ll be getting my work by 8.”

With the few successful events ‘Amplitude’ is growing towards a glittering future. They wish to expand their effort to support the underprivileged Trans community and promote education in the following years.
